The Pathways class is available for senior students to follow and explore specific topics outside the school curriculum. There is a wide range of options available and individual student needs are catered to as much as possible. Many topics build on the learning students gain in other subjects or are pre-learning for tertiary study. Some popular topics include early childhood education, tourism, agriculture or health science. Students are also able to take a variety of university papers through Canterbury, Massey or Waikato universities if eligible.

All courses contribute towards NCEA Level 1, 2 or 3 and/or Vocational qualifications where relevant.

Work Placement Gateway

Work placement opportunities are provided for senior students who wish to gain experience in a particular field of work during one day a week for one term through the government Gateways programme. Students will study papers relevant to their work placement during Pathways class time.

Alternatively, Year 12 and Year 13 students may receive vocational training at the local EIT Trades Academy one day a week during Terms 1-3. The practical learning is alongside theory papers which contribute credits towards NCEA Level 2 or 3.

Employability Skills STAR courses

At Woodford House senior students have the opportunity to attend short courses to enhance their employability, such as barista, retail skills or first aid offered either outside school hours or as a one-three day course.
